The process of starting a library is simple enough and is easily replicated. After speaking to a BKP Executive Director, be ready to collect the following :
1. Formal letter of request for assistance to set up the mini-library and read-aloud project, from the contact group or person in your hometown. (Sample letter available upon request)
2. Demographic profile of your hometown (population, source of income, income level, average educational attainment of population, number of schools, ratio students-teacher, etc.)
3. Letters of support for the mini-library and read-aloud project from people who could provide the following:
a. room for the library and read-aloud program
b. volunteers to do the read-aloud session
c. read-aloud participants, library clients.
4. Written plan about the management of the program - Who will serve as library clerk ? Who will initiate the read-aloud program? Who will recruit the children and their parents ? Who will act as liaison officer with the principals of local schools as well as colleges involved ?
Once all the documents are in, BKP-NY will ship the 1st 1000 children’s books to your libary.
